Mount Harney, Wind Cave, and Crazy Horse Western Vacation Part 8

While we were staying in Custer State Park we did not just drive around looking for animals. One day we drove to Crazy Horse Monument. One day we did a tour of Wind Cave National Park.  We also climbed Mout Harney one afternoon. Mt Harney is the highest point in the country east of the Rocky Mountains.

Crazy Horse Memorial is a work in progress. It will be the largest mountain sculpture in the world. It will dwarf Mt. Rushmore. The cost is twenty dollars a car load. It is easy to see where the money is going since the work is ongoing. I can tell you this, Crazy Horse Memorial will not be completed in our lifetime ( no matter how young you are reading this). Work has been going on for forty years and it has barely made a dent.

There is a lot of controversy surrounding this monument. First off there are no known photos of Crzy Horse. No one alive knows what he looked like. Therefore, the monument is supposed to "represent him. Secondly, the Lakota do not even want to monument carved. To them, the Black Hills are sacred. Every cut into the ground is sacrilegious. I am not politically correct and think people are overly sensitive. However in this case I agree with the Native Americans. If they don't want the monument and no one knows what Crazy Horse looked like, I do not understand why they even started it.

As I stated above, Mount Harney is the highest point east of the Rocky Mountains. Higher than the Smokies and Mount Washington. The hike was fairly easy considering the elevation. .

Unlike our days at Mount Rushmore, the day we hiked overcast. No complaints though, we had amazing weather on the trip

We went to Wind Cave National Park but only had a few hours. We did a tour of the cave. We also went for a hike on the prairie. We went through a prairie dog town. The dogs were not happy to see us. They scolded us the whole way through. The park also has the same wildlife as Custer State Park. The two parks share a border.
